“NYC Animal Care Shelter Conditions are Disgusting” -- NY Post
“Our four-legged friends at city animal care centers suffer from respiratory disease, consume expired food and live in dirty kennels, according to a new audit by Comptroller Scott Stringer.”

NYC Audit Shows Continued
Animal Neglect

by Nathan Winograd
September 17, 2020
“The audit found, ‘unacceptable humidity levels,’ cats, rabbits and other small animals exposed to the sounds of barking dogs, expired food, expired medication, failure to vaccinate, ‘as well as a high rate of respiratory infections.’ In some cases, it found dirty kennels and lack of clean water to drink. But conditions at the pound are so much worse than the audit report suggests. Unfortunately, the auditors did not look at those conditions. Why?”

NYC to Kill Dogs Because of
Their Own Incompetence

by Nathan Winograd
September 15, 2020
“The New York City pound announced it is going to kill dogs and it is blaming the victims. How? It treats dogs poorly. And because it does, the dogs become stressed. And because they are stressed, City officials have announced that they will be killed.”

Activists Decry New Oyster Bay Policy That Would Kill Dogs Deemed ‘Unadoptable’
by Ted Phillips
June 3, 2020

“The new policy does not provide for any training for dogs that are ‘deemed unadoptable’ and permits the shelter to arbitrarily kill dogs” for minor behavioral issues, including ‘food guarding’ and barking at other dogs through a fence.
Picture
Pictured above with the shelter reform advocates who fought to save her, 13-yr-old PRECIOUS became the first victim of the backward new policy to kill rather than rehabilitate dogs arbitrarily labeled “unadoptable.” After Precious was killed, a candlelight vigil and protest, pictured below, was held in her honor at the Town of Oyster Bay kill pound.

Meanwhile, a legal battle is now under way to save RUBY, the next victim on the pound’s kill list. Like Precious, who was killed in spite of multiple rescue offers to save her, Ruby also has a rescue group currently fighting to save her from uncaring bureaucrats with a history of cruelty who would rather kill friendly and rehabilitatable dogs than transfer them to rescues who are willing to train them.

The Right of Rescue is a core lifesaving provision of the Companion Animal Protection Act.

The Illegal Killing of
Lila & Mr Magoo by the
New York City Pound

Advocates Demand Justice for Lila, Mr Magoo and Their Families, Too. . .
Lila and Mr Magoo were both illegally killed by NYC’s high-kill pound in violation of the 3-day hold, even as their loved ones arrived within a day to reclaim them, proving that the city pound fails to perform even the most basic function of an animal “shelter”: reuniting lost companions with their families.

Lost Family Dog Killed Shortly After Being Brought to
the NYC Pound

by Bethany Cefalu
TV News 12 Westchester

December 9, 2019
The killing of Lila was “a pet owners worst nightmare — a lost animal winds up in a shelter and killed in under 24 hours.” Lila had a microchip with her family's address. The family lives five minutes from the New York City pound. They adopted Lila from that pound 16 years earlier. The animal control officer drove by their house on the way to having Lila killed. The pound violated the stray holding period required by law by killing her. The family came to claim Lila within hours, only to be told she was already dead.

The Killing of Maverick

Picture

The subject of the NY Companion Animal Protection Act first came to light nationally following media coverage of a horrifying video that was recorded on Thursday, May 9th, 2019, at the New York City pound in Manhattan. The video, leaked to advocates and posted to social media, shows a 'euth tech' attempting to block the view of a rescue volunteer who bravely kept recording as uncaring employees dragged a frightened dog named Maverick to the kill room. Maverick seemed to sense his fate and resisted his killers by lying down, showing no sign of aggression, as was reported in the New York Post:

The video shows the sedated pit bull pup being dragged on the floor before getting up and stumbling into the shelter’s kill room, while other dogs in the background loudly howl and bark... The center defended [killing] the dog — who it said was named Maverick — telling The Post he was brought to the shelter by the NYPD on April 25 at the behest of his Bronx family after allegedly biting his owner... But when Maverick was picked up by police at his former home, sources say the pooch was friendly, wagged his tail and hopped right into the back of the police cruiser where he remained calm and friendly the whole ride to the shelter.
